  • Windows or UNIX hosting ?
The internet was based on UNIX. Traditionally UNIX has been regarded as more reliable although since the introduction of Windows2000 reliability is equal. UNIX is better at running CGI/Perl based sites (esp bulletin boards) but Windows is more flexible and offers more options.

The honest answer is that unless you *know* you want/need UNIX, a Windows package will suit and offer future flexibility.
  • I just have a basic site - whats best ?
Our Win50 or RED50 package contains all you need to setup your own website, provide interactive features like guestbooks and feedback forms, and handle all your email requirements.

  • I'd like to try a database driven site...
A good starting place is Microsoft Access (Windows only) or mySQL (both Windows and UNIX and is free). You will need a Win100 or RED100 hosting account to do this.

  • ASP / PHP / CGI / Coldfusion - aarrghh what are these ?
These are all scripting languages designed to add functionality to your webpages. ASP is Microsofts offering. PHP is an open source (free) scripting language. CGI scripts are old style now, usually written in Perl. Coldfusion is a powerful enterprise scripting language.

If you have not learnt any, our recommendation would be PHP. Otherwise stick to what you know.
  • I want to be able to get my email anywhere...
You need our webmail product. Similar to hotmail, you can send/receive email worldwide. This is available individually, or if you have a large number of users, a Win200 or RED200 is best.
